I decided to stop hiding my icons under a barrel. My "coming out" process is very slow though. Icon making is a nice distraction from other stress for me, and I do have this inferiority complex in that the editor I use is a decade-old copy of Paintshop Pro 6 (I think), not any version of Photoshop. So most of the tutorials and tips for spiffying things up are next to useless for me. The programs simply don't have the same tools.

I mostly do color adjustment, sometimes just correction, sometime more stylized or dramatic hues for my iconing mood at the time. I like slight over-exposure effects in some shots or bringing out bright colors. I don't do brushes or too many blends/etc. I seldom do captioning, so most of my icons would make okay bases. I often sharpen or soften for effect then bring down to the proper size (100x100 in this case). Nothing fancy. But I like the effect of much of my more recent work. Or cleaning up of older work. I want to get a good set of my hundreds of Armand icons put together for posting/sharing.

I actually posted two sets over at Hollow Art. Malcolm Jamieson and Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria. Oh, and someone liked the Julia Andrews set. It's easily miles better than the other one. It was hard getting good screen caps of Richard, because he's really a minor character and has most of his scenes in smoky bars. And yesterday, because of an event at The Last Voyages later this week, I broke down and made icons of Jamieson from his poetry channel on YouTube. He's not exactly old!Armand that way, but it's the closest I'm going to get, and some of them came out very sweet.

When the Daydream set him on the shore, the cold sunless sky did little to cheer Armand. His feet were on his native soil again, and he could feel no joy in it, only the fierce determination–nay desperation–of his purpose. So he put his back to the safety and comfort of his only tie to England and walked inland.

After only a few miles, Armand realized one of the flaws in the accuracy of his disguise. )

Roic's behavior was scandalous. A Vorkosigan armsman should not proposition men in service to other Vor families. The other man had sensibly declined his offer.

Pym watched the unhappy younger man demolish a bowl of groats. He considered as Roic's lips covered the spoon, slipping the cereal into his mouth, then a pink tongue cleaned away the residue. Decision made, Pym stood. "Roic, a private word, please?"

When Roic joined him in the hallway, Pym pushed him against the wall, leaning to kiss the startled armsman, all elegant lines bending to meet strapping bulk.

"You should have asked an expert."

Ohtori Academy was so isolated from the rest of the world that Akio sometimes marveled that it had weather like ordinary places did. It would not be real if it didn't, he knew, but the sight of storm clouds rushing in across a darkening sky or a mist rising as the dew burned off in the morning sun sometimes found him wishing he could have his better days back. But then the fickle wind would bring him a whiff of roses. He'd gag, and then he'd know he couldn't be Dios again. Ever. Worse, he knew whose fault it was.

Mood: disappointed

One day the acting chairman of Ohtori Academy received a letter, followed by a phone call. As far as Utena knew, this was the first time Akio and Anthy took a trip. With some concern for her well-being, they advised her that she should stay in the regular campus dormitories while they were gone.

“Stay with Wakaba. She’d like the company,” Anthy suggested, her smile blankly cheerful.

“We have to hurry,” was all Akio added after that. “Our plane leaves soon.”

If there was any significance in the hand squeeze Anthy gave her before she left, Utena couldn’t guess it, even though she felt as if Anthy had squeezed her heart instead. She could only watch them drive away in Akio’s red car. His hair streamed back in the wind of their speed, but Anthy’s was too tightly curled to be caught in the breeze. Soon they were out of sight.

When their plane landed in Germany, Akio wouldn’t admit that he was tired and thirsty. )

Oct. 20th, 2009 @ 09:59 am Muggle-watching

Having a night off was a rare thing. Gideon Prewett didn't envy Isaac Ortenberg's evening duty with his apprentice, bright though Jackie Potter could be. He apparated to an alley near the Muggle pub where his brother had agreed to meet him for their night out. For once, they'd agreed not to bring any girls along. Just them for a good fun night of beer and Muggle-watching.

No one could be seen at either end of the alley, so Gideon went to the door of the pub and stepped into the smokey interior. It was too late to be very crowded, but they had plenty of time before last call. He went up and ordered a pint of bitter and then commandeered a table for two right in the middle of the pub. If he was getting any stares, it was because he was an unusually handsome fellow, not for his carefully selected Muggle attire of a sleeveless red t-shirt, grubby denim jeans and rubber galoshes.

Gideon sipped his beer and waited for his brother to show up.

He felt tired enough the next day that Armand wanted to put off talking to his sister. He knew she wouldn't be proud how of he'd spent the few hours after her party ended, so he avoided her again. He avoided everyone. Again. Avoidance was becoming a habit with him.

Eventually, he knew he couldn't put it off any longer. )

"I thought we'd have more time." Roselyn leaned her cheek against his back. "If he hadn't seen you, we could have put it off." He could feel how rigid she was against his body. The pressure of her fear was not comforting.

"Put what off?" He broke the grip of her arms and turned to look down at her, but he was not prepared for the force of her anxiety. He found he could say no more.

Taking his arm, she led him toward the bed. )

He awoke with incredible pain. When he opened his eyes, he saw a gray sky directly above and the heights of the barricade dimly around him. As soon as he tried to free his shoulders from the rough hands that grasped them, he heard someone call loudly, "Over here! This one's not dead!"

At first, the pain so filled him that he could not think. )

Thursday, 7 October

At about the same time as his mentor was attending to the education of the Whitfield boy, Severus Snape was doing his own rounds with his first year friends. He really did not know if Gareth had him stuck with both professor's children by design or what, but... He heaved a great sigh, as he sought out the first of his targets. Get the worst out of the way first. The worst it was, because he liked professor Cloutier, and Cloutier doted on him, most of the time. Putting his son under Imperius seemed... backhanded. Or something. He didn't have Gareth's finesse, (or his damned toys, that's for sure), but he did, at least, have enough residual idea of the boy to locate him fairly easily.

Actually, Henrik Cloutier was not hard to find. )

They returned from Doyleton on a glorious spring evening. Armand managed to keep to himself during the ride back, watching the trees slip by, sometimes craning his head up to see the sky, such a delicate blue, like Marguerite's eyes. On some of the tighter curves he felt he could reach out and touch the filmy green branches. Armand adored spring, growing things, flowers and blossoms, but he was tired, tired enough to be distracted.

Travelling in the early

Sea travel was the most tedious thing Armand had ever experienced. At least it was boring for the passengers; the crew always seemed to have plenty to do. So when the harbor to his home city was spotted, he hung resolutely to the rail to watch the land grow bigger and bigger on the horizon.

When the ship entered the harbor, he'd gone to his cabin, shared with four other university students from Caminus, to get his trunk and put on his best coat. He knew his father would send an office boy or someone from the factory to meet the ship with a cab. So he'd see the factory before he saw the house. Usually, he didn't mind. The factory had been his home unitl he was almost six years old. He wasn't quite sure of his age. Besides, the house was likely empty at this hour, and he counted Caminus as his home these days.

Digging into his pockets for the last of his allowance, Armand hurriedly tipped two stewards a few coins each to carry his trunk to the cab. To his surprise, his father waited on the docks. The elder Perinson stood at the very end of the gangplank, hat in hand, letting the wild breeze tangle his graying dark hair. With an excited wave, Armand ran the rest of the way. He wasn't as careful as he ought to be, so he stumbled and tripped at the last. His father, used to such things from when Armand had been a child, caught him awkwardly.

"Papa!" Armand cried, and hugged him.

I've written a new "article" over at Helium. Please go read it. It's technically a short story, and DF!ers will recognize the subject though there's creative license to make sure I'm not stepping on too many toes. And it's blissfully short (only about 500 or so words).

Short Stories: Lies (most recent)
Poetry: Remembering
Short Stories: Relationships

Poetry: Circle of Life (Starlight)
Drama: Pain
Memoirs: My father

Remember guys, I actually get paid for people going to go read these, so please go read. You can comment here if you have much to say about them. I'm always looking to improve.

Character(s): Utena Tenjou, Anthy Himemiya and some Doyleton NPCs
Pairing(s) (if applicable): Utena/Anthy
Summary: On a trip to Doyleton, Utena gets a massage and rethinks her relationship with the Anthy she found at Landel's Institute.
Notes (if applicable): Many apologies to Utena and Anthy's players. I was having a hard time juggling movie canon vs. series canon, but I love these characters so much I really wanted to try. I hope it's more cute and sappy than offensive.

Sitting alone in the Sun Room trying to soak up the warmth streaming through the window wasn't Utena's usual style, but she had several issues on her mind to distract her. She much preferred to talk through what was on her mind, but even in the collection of misfits and forces of nature that made up her fellow inmates at Landel's Institute she thought only one person would understand. And that one person was the very one she didn't want to share her current thoughts.

Himemiya.

Getting there...

Author's Note: This is parody of a summary of this episode of The Adventure Series television show based on the Enid Blyton books. I found these because this apparently the last professional work that Malcolm Jamieson did before disappearing off the face of the Earth. I'd like to see these because of that even though they're more amusing even than the original books (I've read one or two of them as I could get my hands on them). And these summaries, provided by the distribution company were pretty funny before I added things.
